New Delhi (dpa), 17 Nov, 2020- India on Tuesday registered 29,163 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24  hours, marking the lowest daily increase in four months, data released by the federal health ministry showed Tuesday.

Tuesday’s figure was the first time India’s daily case count dropped to under 30,000 for the first time since July 15, when the country logged 29,429 new infections.

India’s infection curve rose steadily after that to peak at nearly 98,000 cases a day in mid-September, before declining markedly after October.

According to the ministry update, the countrywide caseload stands at 8,874,290, second only to the United States. A total of 130,519 have died in connection with the virus.

The number of daily cases in India has been declining for six consecutive weeks. Although India is past the first virus peak, federal and regional governments are anticipating another surge in cases in the coming winter months when respiratory infections rise, broadcaster NDTV reported.

In New Delhi, the worst hit among the states, hospitals have reported a shortage of intensive care beds for Covid-19 patients.
