Health officials say that there is a rapid spread of dengue fever. In the past four months of 2025, 17,450 dengue patients have been reported, and in April alone, 5,018 patients were reported.
Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Specialist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, says:
“Currently, there is a spread of dengue disease. Only 06 dengue deaths have been reported. 5,018 dengue infected people were reported in April. An increase in dengue patients has been observed in the past few weeks. The current weather conditions are a reason for this. Also, with the upcoming southwest monsoon, there is a risk that the number of dengue patients will increase further. Chikungunya, which is spread by the same mosquito that transmits dengue, has also been reported in several other districts, including the Western Province. As there is a high risk of this in the future, the month of May has been designated as a special mosquito control month. In particular, everyone should pay attention to destroying mosquito breeding sites every day of the week. We hope that the law will be implemented against those who continue to maintain mosquito breeding sites without destroying them.”
